On Saturday we offer an optional excursion to the Weltenburg monastery. It includes a bus ride, a boat tour, a brewery tour, lunch with drinks, a hike, a tour though the liberation hall and a small dinner with drinks.
The bus will pick you up at the Parkside center and will bring you to Kelheim.
The Danube Gorge is the deepest and the narrowest stretch of the Bavarian Danube and the most spectacular scenery of the Danube valley. Bavarian King Ludwig imposed the protection of this natural wonder as early as the year 1840. Since 1978 the Weltenburg Gorge is the only Bavarian nature reserve awarded the European Diploma of Protected Areas. The boat will drop us off after about 45 minutes at the Weltenburg monastery.
The world's oldest monastery brewery opens its doors: discover the origins of the award-winning Weltenburg dark beer and find out the secret of Bavaria's most popular specialty, the top fermented wheat beer. Peek into the brew house for a close look at a working brewery and learn about the monastery's one thousand years of history in the visitor-center. Find your favorite beer during a beer tasting and take your own original Weltenburg beer glass home with you.
Eat, drink and relax in the shadowed beer garden or in the beautiful rooms of the monastery restaurant. Enjoy Bavarian delicacies from the region including, once more, the world famous dark beer from the monastery brewery. Please note: On weekends no reservations are taken for the beer garden.
Experience the landscape of the Danube Valley and watch the indigenous wildlife of this nature reserve whilst hiking beside the river back to Kelheim.
During a guided visit of the famous Liberation Hall you'll hear about the story behind the impressive building on top of the Michelsberg in Kelheim. It should remind future generations of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon in the early 1800s. From the roof of the monument you get a unique panoramic view of the ducal city of Kelheim and the river valleys of Donau and Altmühl. After the tour your bus will drive the group to Kelheim.
The brew house is situated in the heart of the brewery in the historic center of Kelheim, just a few steps away from the piers, the walking and cycling paths along the Danube. The old buildings radiate a love of tradition and lots of snugness — to the visible delight of locals and visitors. Aside from several different public rooms and halls it offers a homely, sheltered beer garden with lots of flair, air, light and sun. The cooking is down-to-earth and local; the beer is fresh from the brewery.
Your bus will pick up the group and drive you back to Regensburg. Arrival at around 18:00.
